Taking Advantage of Other People’s Ideas

Implementing Ideas

Often, when we hear the phrase “taking advantage of”, we may think of something that is negative. We may think of taking someone else’s ideas and acting like they were our ideas when we know they weren’t. Indeed, this could be the case if someone decides they want to operate like that, but in this article I am going to look at this concept from a different angle. I want to view it from the angle of allowing others to both present their ideas as well as allowing them to implement their ideas.

I, for one, am someone who likes to talk about ideas with other people and hear their ideas. But, even more than that, I like to be able to give them the chance to implement those ideas! It’s my way of giving them a chance to shine and when it is something they love doing, you can almost see them shine while they are implementing them!

By creating a culture where these kinds of things are not only allowed but are also encouraged, we as leaders and influencers may be surprised at the positive results that even benefit us personally. I’m talking about results that micromanaging just can’t produce!

By allowing others to contribute to the process of creating and implementing ideas, it shows that we are generating a culture that produces creative thinkers and doers rather than a culture in which people can only do what they are told.

As an influencer, we should not want to fall into the trap of thinking that our ideas are always the best ideas. I can assure you they are not. We can come up with ideas and we can make plans, but if someone has a better idea and is willing to help us execute that idea, then why not give them a chance?

Giving people a chance to be part of the process of creating and implementing ideas is one of the surest ways of discovering the best ideas. Once the best ideas are discovered, giving credit where it is due creates a culture of appreciation which in turn generates more great ideas. As a result, morale will improve and the culture will thrive.

No single person in any realm of life has all the best plans or all the best ideas. This is why it is a good idea to take advantage of other people’s ideas in the right way!
