Matthew 6:28-29 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: (29) And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
I’m going to start off by making an obvious statement. “Our God is great big God!” Knowing that He is a great big God, it is not difficult to believe Him to take care of, and to care for, what we would consider to be the great big things. This being the case, we can easily forget, and naturally so, that this “great big God” also cares about, and is attuned to, what we would call “the small things of life”.
It has been said that nothing on Earth is faster than a toddler who has just been asked, “What’s that in your mouth?”, and this may be the case to a great degree. I would also say that no one prays as much, or as fervently, as someone who has a great big need in their lives. Whether that need be financial, job-related, health-related, etc., they are ready to believe, and put into practice, the true scripture that declares in James 5:16 …The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. This is an admirable thing to do, and it should be done! While we are acknowledging God’s bigness and His greatness, does it occur to us that our great God is also just as interested in the small things of our lives?
I believe this attribute of God tends to go unnoticed by most of God’s children, myself included. I have a few questions to help put this into perspective. What have you done so far just today? Get up; eat breakfast; wake up the kids, feed them and get them ready for school; read your Bible? I have another question. Are all these things important to you? I would say that some or all of them carry some importance or else you wouldn’t be doing them, right?
Can I tell you that these everyday mundane things are actually important to God as well? I am not saying that He is going to give you a heavenly revelation every time you butter your toast in the morning, but I am saying that God cares more about what we would call the “small things” of life than we often would give Him credit.
In his book entitled Lies Men Believe and the Truth that Sets them Free, Robert Wolgemuth makes the following observation about the bigness of God (emphasis mine). “God’s “bigness” isn’t the kind of bigness that overlooks smallness. Rather it is a bigness that encompasses smallness. He does not farm out the management of the details to underlings while He looks after the big stuff. He is all-knowing, His power is inexhaustible, and His control is absolute.” As Jesus basically put it in Matthew 6 and Matthew 10 respectively, God even cares about the lilies of the field and each sparrow in the air. When is the last time you even thought about a lily in the field or a sparrow in the air, much less saw one? And yet, it’s almost as if Jesus is telling us that God is constantly taking notice of them even in regions of the earth where there’s not even a human being to be found for many miles around, much less someone there to even see these creations of God!
I think intellectually we all know these things, but do we operate in the daily tasks of our lives conscious of them? Probably not as much as we should. This could be why so many people are not as encouraged as they could be in the Lord. They may be looking for “the next big thing in my life” when God wants them to acknowledge Him in all their ways (Proverbs 3:5 – 6), even the everyday things we often take for granted.
As Robert also observes in his book (again, emphasis mine), “Sometimes we divide our lives into large moments of great import and small moments of ordinariness. However, when God gave us the Great Commandment – that we must love Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength – He was telling us that He wants all of us, and that means all of our moments, great ones and little ones alike”.
So, that which you are doing…right now…God cares about it. He cares about why you do it, how you do it, for whom you do it, how well you do it, etc. Life’s big moments do not just happen. They are simply a compilation of the small moments; small moments about which God cares. He truly is The Big God of the Small Things! In what small, seemingly mundane, things of life can you better acknowledge God? Do you believe He actually cares about those things?
